It was great to see some of you again for spring conferences. Thank you for taking the time to come in to chat. This will be a fairly short update as I saw a lot of you yesterday.
We did team building again yesterday. We focused primarily on communication skills in our activities. We played Simon Says and did the "Peanut Butter & Jelly activity," and some did an activity with Kinects. Please speak with your student about these games. They were a lot of fun, and they learned how important clear and concise communication really is! ( For some reason the pictures are unable to load, so I will be posting photos later on! ) I wanted to also let you know that SBAC state testing is happening next week, Tuesday-Friday. Students will be taking ELA tests all four days. The testing will happening in the afternoon and will disrupt much of our regular schedule. We will be having regular classes, but students may not have all of their classes in one day due to when testing has to happen. Students will continue to go to specials and recess during their normally scheduled times. I recommend sending in extra snacks during testing weeks. Students tend to be working extra hard for longer periods of time than they are used to. Extra food/snacks are helpful and seem to keep them going. If you'd like to see what kind of test your child is going to be taking, you should check out the practice test that is available online. The link is below, and if you try it out you will be able to experience the same type of test! All you need to do is login as "Guest/Guest" and you'll be able to give it a try (make sure you select 6th grade tests)!

This week flew by. This time of year is great, the weather is warmer, we seem a bit happier, we get to enjoy the fresh air because we are lucky enough to be in a classroom that has an outside wall, with windows! Your students have been very busy this week. Here's the rundown: ELA : We are diving into our Informational Text Unit. Students examined text features and text structures, which may sound like a bore, but they did it while reading really interesting Scope Articles. Our topics of reading have covered everything from Eating Insects (ew!) to Sea Turtles, to Pythons that have taken over the Florida Everglades. We are discussing how we read nonfiction differently than we read fiction and the differences of the two genres, in general. It's one of my favorite units, and the topics we read are quite interesting. Perhaps eating bugs will be your topic of dinner conversation this evening? Science- They got to create stream tables in science class. This was a great way to learn about river formation, erosion and deposition. They had a lot of fun with this hands on, messy activity. The pictures at the bottom of this post are from Mr. Sanborn! Math- Students started working with Area and Perimeter of rectangles and triangles in math. Geography- Geography was spent studying the different cultures in Europe. Students explored sports, foods, music, and traditions. This coincided perfectly with the field trip we were lucky enough to attend on Monday. The students enjoyed listening to the Irish band Goitse. They are playing again at the Barre Opera House on Saturday if anyone is interested. The music was fantastic! Reminders- New this year, we will be doing spring conferences on March 17th. Students will have a half day (dismissed at 11:30) and conferences will run like they did in the fall. Like fall conferences, this isn't a time to talk about grades and/or to ask me questions about math, for example. We as a team, encourage you to reach out to specific teachers if you have questions about performance in core classes. Mr. Sanborn is much more capable of talking about your child's performance in science than I am! We will be discussing your child's progress on their year long goal, and then we will be revising and/or creating a new goal for the rest of the year. The link to the Google Doc is below. If you would like to have a conference please use the Google Doc to sign up. If March 17th doesn't work for you, I am flexible, please just contact me. Please put your name and your child's name next to a time that works for you. If you cannot access it, or add your name to it, please email me and I will add you to the document. Thank you!
