Be sure to ask your child about our exciting game of "Heads Up" with Mrs. Allen's TA. We had a blast this morning, it was a very energetic way to start our day. We had a competition to see which TA could get their teacher to guess the most words correctly.... we won! So much fun. We also celebrated two birthdays today! Happy Birthday Meredith and Molly! There were six birthdays that were being celebrated today (and tomorrow) throughout the sixth grade- craziness!
In other news- there is no ELA assignment this week due to the short funky week. Students WILL receive a weekly assignment next WEDNESDAY, that will be due the Friday after the long Columbus day weekend. Lastly- please be sure to recheck the conference sign up times. I see a few of you on Monday morning! Please remember to bring your child with you to our meeting! Have a great weekend.

We had Fun Friday in TA this morning. We played board games. Then, Gino brought in his Bearded Dragon, Zoe, and we got to see her in science AND during indoor recess. I stepped way out of my comfort zone and actually held Zoe! Just a few pics from the excitement are below! Hello! For the past couple of weeks in ELA, we have been doing some grammar review. I promised the students that I would try to make grammar "as fun as possible," knowing that grammar practice isn't always that exciting. We have watched videos, listened to silly songs (including one from SchoolHouse Rock!) about the following topics: subject/predicates, complete sentence, nouns/verbs, and then we talked about the commonly misused words like; there, their, they're, to, two, too... etc. Ask them about the songs "Noun Town," and "Mr. Morton." They may roll their eyes, but they could probably sing them for you! If you'd like to hear them, they are located on Google Classroom! Yesterday and today, students were then given the challenge of creating a meme (Above is a Zombie meme I shared with them as an example!) or illustration to represent the meaning of the commonly misused words. While working on these activities it was exciting to see that we have some artists in here AND students are quite funny. I can't wait to share them when they are finished! While grammar isn't always fun, changing up the delivery to students has made it a bit more interesting. **Below are pictures of our TA hard at work on their illustrations! Odds & Ends***The first week long ELA assignment is due tomorrow! It's a short Summarizing worksheet about the 9/11 attacks. If you haven't yet, take a look at the article, it's such an interesting read. Also- we talked about how even though the students weren't alive at the time, their parents would definitely be able to share where they were when the attacks happened, as it is a day in our lives we will probably never forget. If they are asking about that, it's because we chatted about it in class!
***Our room can be cold at times, be sure your child brings layers - a sweatshirt would be helpful! ***Please sign up for conferences if you haven't already. ***I'm looking for some more beach chairs (like the ones in the pictures above). If you have any taking up space in your garage, that you no longer need, please feel free to send them in. Two of our chairs have been broken already. *** I sent home book order forms for students today. Scholastic book orders are something I send home every couple of months for families who are interested in purchasing books. The book orders include some very reasonably priced books for students of all abilities. There are two ways that you can order. You can order through the use of the paper catalogs, attached to this letter. If you choose to use the catalogs, please send in the filled out form and a check (no cash will be accepted) written to Scholastic Book Clubs, inside an envelope, with your child’s name on it. You can also order online. (I find this to be the easiest and most efficient way!) If you use the link below, you can order from the same catalogs, and more, on the website. The order will be linked to our classroom, and will arrive here at school, with the regular catalog orders. There is more information for online ordering available at the website! https://orders.scholastic.com/JVWRN Book orders are due on Wednesday, September 28th. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Hello all!
Hard to believe we already have finished another week of 6th grade. Time is already flying by. My update this week isn't really about what's been happening in class, but what is happening in less than a month. Parent Teacher Conferences are occuring on Thursday, October 6th, from 11:30 on. Students will have a half day of school. Sixth grade teachers will be having 15 minute conferences for each student, so we can fit everyone in!. Students are expected to come with parents for this meeting. . Over the next couple of weeks your students will be creating academic goals they can work on for 6th grade. Goals can range form becoming more fluent in multiplication facts, to staying organized within the binder. Goals are meant to be specific to school. So, if your child has a goal of making "A team" for Hockey, or scoring more goals in soccer, that needs to be something that's worked on at home! Please talk with your child about what goals they wish to accomplish. These conversations will help with the creation of the goals here at school. I want to be clear as to what these conferences are for. Conferences are a chance for students to share with their parents, the goals they have created and hope to accomplish over the course of the year. It's also the place that parents can have their input so goals can be changed/tweaked for specific needs. The conferences are not for asking about missing assignments, questions about content, or grades. Please, if you have questions about something happening in a certain class, feel free to contact that teacher with your question. Sixth grade teachers are very responsive to email. Don't wait until conference time to check in. Using Infinite Campus to check in on students progress is a great way to stay informed. We encourage parents to check the parent portal once a week to stay on top of grades/assignments. If your login is lost, please have them log in for you! You can also contact Kim Benson ([email protected]) for a new parent login. Infinite Campus also has a mobile app that is free and accessible on most devices. I know many parents that use it daily! Unfortunately, a graduate class that I'm taking (and cannot miss) also falls on the same day as conferences. So my conference schedule is going to be a bit different than everyone elses. I will only be having conferences until 2:30 that day, and then I'll need to leave to get to Blue Mountain High School for my class. I'm going to try to make up those times throughout that entire week. What you will see in your email (sent Thursdsay, 9/15) is a link to a Google Document. On that doc will be all of my available times. Please choose a time and type your name and your child's name next to the time you would like to sign up for. If these times don't work for you, please let me know. We can schedule something different if necessary. If you have trouble with the document, please send me an email and I can add you on the time slot you would like. I look forward to meeting with you and your child to talk about their goals. If you have any questions, please let me know! It has been a busy week. We got to dive into curriculum and do some actual content area learning! There was an assessment in science, a fun online activity in ELA, a challenging assignment of writing directions to their homes in Geo, and some work with division in math. I was so busy with the students that I never even took pictures this week! That is not typical for me.
Students have been successfully getting into each classroom routine. They are transitioning quickly and working together well. The sixth grade teachers work well together and make sure all routines/expectations are as consistent across the grade level as possible. Students know exactly what to expect in each classroom. This week in TA we continued our "Count to 11" game and turned it into a competition between girls and boys. The girls won one game and the boys won the second game. We'll see how the competition heats up next week. Please be sure to head over to the 6th grade site to check out announcements about homework club and to see what's happening in all other subject areas. Have a great weekend! We have completed our first week in sixth grade together. Student were given so much information this week and really did a great job taking it all in. We practiced routines and expectations over and over and over again! We will continue to practice these as we move through sixth grade.
Students also took a lot of our pre-assessments in math and ELA that will show us what they know. These assessments will be used to help form our enrichment groups. Students will start enrichment next week! In TA we have been having good conversations, during our meetings. I'm learning we have a competitive group. We played one game this week a couple of times (Count to 11) and students had fun with that. Ask them how to play, it could be a fun game to play in the car or at a family gathering. I'm looking forward to diving into the curriculum with these guys next week. THe first week is often full of routines and expectations and not a lot of content. Next week we will be diving into the curriculum in all areas. Math homework will be handed out for the first time today and will be due on Friday of next week. Check out the sixth grade website for information about weekly math assignments. Also on the website, check out the News and Announcements section for information about homework club, which will be starting up next Wednesday. Please check it out and email me with any questions you have! Remember the 6th grade website has information about all content areas - including course information, expectations, as well as links to the other teachers blogs, where you get a view into their classes! Please use it! Have a great long weekend with your families! |
