Our students came together and raised $402.00 during the Change for Change drive over the past few weeks! This money will go to help sponsor families in need over the holidays. I was super impressed with the way the kids came together to empty their piggy banks and to donate change to families less fortunate. For all of their hard work the students were rewarded with a Pizza Party! Keep a look out for info about our own TA's Adopt a Family fundraiser that will be happening after Thanksgiving!

It has been a little while since I have updated the blog, but what a busy few weeks it has been! We have come to the end of our first quarter in 6th grade and so many awesome things have happened. We had parent-teacher-student conferences, got to participate in a stay-at-school field trip and the students successfully published the first "issue" of the Bobcat Digi Mag.
As it was a very memorable day, here's a recap of the fantastic time we had on our field trip! On October 23th the facilitators from Northern Lights Rock and Ice visited Barre Town School. We started the day, with the entire sixth grade, all together in the gym, with some great warm-up, team-building activities. Students had to work together to find similarities amongst differences and were challenged to cooperate with others who they may not be used to working with. We then broke up into TA groups and our TA got to head to the rock climbing wall. The wall was quite a challenge because not only was it almost 25 feet high, but it was pouring rain and cold. The students did a great job of supporting each other and encouraging each other up the rock wall. It even made it a little easier for me to climb up the wall hearing "GO Mrs. V!" After the rock wall, we went back inside for three more team-building challenges. Students participated in the lego-building activity. Students were broken into small teams of 6-8 students. Within their small groups they had to choose to be an architect or a builder. Architects had to give the builders directions on how to build a lego train, and the builders weren't allowed to see the directions! It was a big lesson in communication and team work. It definitely frustrated some students, but they worked through it. After legos we participated in two more challenges. Students first had to talk about goal setting, and through a water dropper and a penny, they learned that setting goals and working towards them is very rewarding. They also learned that no matter what, all people need to work hard to accomplish their goals. Ask your students how many drops of water they can fit on a penny, without it spilling over! Lastly we headed back to our space and did the "Key Punch Activity." This by far was one of the most difficult cooperation challenges, but I was overly impressed by our TA's ability work together. They talked to each other, listened to one another, and figured out a great strategy to "punch the keys" as fast as they could. We ended the day with another whole sixth grade challenge, that started off as frustrating for most, but through the chaos came teamwork and cooperation. Students figured out how to work through their frustration. Overall, this day was a huge learning experience for all students that participated, and it was a day full of fun! The photos below are just a few from our awesome day! |
