Over the past couple of weeks we have been working on creating and finalizing our classroom rules. Students discussed what it means to Be Respectful, Take Responsibility, and Stay safe inside our room. They came up with a ton of rules, but we then narrowed it down to two or three that could fit into each category. Their rules are to the right! I think they did a great job. TA has been fun the past couple of days because we played the Name Game. Ask your students what the Name Game is. It's a fun, fast paced game that we will add to our games we play during TA time. Students also received their first weekly ELA assignment. The assignment involves reading a story in the Scope Magazine. Theses magazines are full of non-fiction and fiction stories and are so high interest, students LOVE them. This week the students will be practicing the skill of making inferences and finding evidence from the text to back them up. This is a skill we have been working in class, and this homework is a chance to independently practice that. All materials are in the homework folder, the assignment is due Friday of next week, and they can also access the SCOPE website through Google Classroom. Take a look at the Scope magazines, they are awesome! I'm enjoying getting to know your students more and more as time goes on. We are enjoying our TA time together, and really making progress in meeting expectations. Please remind students that it is important to know "when" it is the right time to be silly and chat with friends, because that seems to be the one thing that we are struggling with in all classrooms. I hope everyone has a great weekend! The weather looks like it will be fantastic. Also below are some photos of our TA and of our TA working.

This week flew by. Students are continuing to settle in nicely. We had our first indoor recess, celebrated our summer reading, and have continued to get to know each other a bit more. Please be sure to see the bus letter that was sent home. Above are pics from games during indoor recess, morning meeting, and even a snapshot of recess today. Have a great weekend!
For those of you that don't know me, I keep this blog updated weekly/biweekly. I will send an email with a link to the blog on Thursdays or Fridays. This is where I share information about what's going on with my TA. SIxth grade info and announcements will be on the sixth grade site! The first week is always the toughest. There are so many expectations and routines to be learned. The "nuts n' bolts" of the classroom need to be taught, everything from what's expected when signing out to use the bathroom, to how we sharpen our pencils, to how we pack up. This may sound silly or even a little too detail oriented, but if these procedures and routines are not set up in the first few days to school, it can make the rest of the year quite challenging. You may have heard some moans and groans from your kiddos about the lack of excitement during this first couple of days, if that's the case, it's because of all of the routines! The good thing is, they are getting them down, and they are really falling into the 6th grade routines nicely. In TA we have been starting (and will each day!) everyday in our Circle of Power and Respect. This is also known as Morning Meeting or CPR. During these morning time we greet each other, have some sort of share, talk about our day, and also play a game. Some things we talked about in our circle this week were things that we are looking forward to in 6th grade, ways to make all of us feel included, and of course we talked about summer. This week we also learned the game Count to 11. They then tried to come up with a way to make the game more fun. Ask them about how "Revenge Count to 11" went! It was an interesting modification to the game! I slacked off in the area of taking pictures and only took pictures once while we were doing a quick partner activity. They are below. You can expect more photos as the year goes on. I have a feeling you'll have some tired kiddos this weekend. I hope they take the time to have some fun but also to rest up! Enjoy your long weekend and we'll see them all back here on Tuesday! Students will have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting next week. |
