I'm not sure if you're up to date with the latest social media craze, but being a middle school teacher, I kind of need to stay on top of these things-so I know what kids are into! The latest craze is what's called The Mannequin Challenge- where groups freeze in place and someone records all of the frozen mannequins in place. If you haven't seen this, check out the link! http://www.cbsnews.com/news/behind-the-mannequin-challenge-the-internets-newest-phenomenon/) The students proposed that we do our own Mannequin Challenge- and I gladly accepted it, and added a twist. I thought it may be fun to do the challenge in a different room, when another teacher isn't expecting it. So, we decided to "prank" Mrs. Kingzett and do the challenge in her room. We practiced all week, freezing in place and being still as statutes. We had a secret "signal phrase" that would alert them it was time to freeze. We walked in this morning and pulled it off without a hitch, well almost without a hitch- my camera didn't record the first one- but Mr. Sanborn was in on the secret and also got footage! We had so much fun doing it, we then did it to Mrs. Allen, in the afternoon! A compilation of the video footage is below- please check it out- we really had a blast! Their enthusiasm for this activity gets me excited for the fun we will have with the Second Annual Lip Sync Battle! *The school-wide food drive is still going on and our class has set a goal for 100 items. We have currently brought in a total of 57 items, we are more than half way to our goal! Non-perishable food items are being collected for the next few weeks! *Our family sponsorship has been a huge success. I've had a ton of help (Thank you Colleen!) and we currently have all the clothing items we need for each child in our family. We also have a few toys and arts n crafts supplies. Thanks goes to all of you that have donated so far. It's such a great cause and your involvement is truly appreciated. *Remember- no school Wed-Friday of next week!

This week was quite interesting with the election playing out. I was really impressed by the mature and thoughtful conversations we had over the course of two days, in our morning meetings. On election day there was a lot of excitement. People were excited to see who won, excited to talk about the candidates, and also excited to see that the election would finally be "over," so they no longer had to hear about it on TV! On Wednesday we spent a lot of time talking about the results. We looked at state results vs national results. Students expressed concerns but also excitement. The focus of our discussion revolved around kindness and empathy. We talked about how amazing it is that we live in a place that lets us elect a person for president, and how special it is that we have the freedom of speech to talk about our thoughts and feelings. We also spoke about how no matter what opinions our friends have, we need to respect that they have the right to their own thoughts and we still need to be kind. It was interesting to hear 11 and 12 year old discuss such a serious topic, and it was interesting to see it through their eyes. I hope these conversations continue at home with your families because they were so deep and thoughtful! Reminders/Updates*Thanks for your continued support during the gift drive. Our seven year old girl is completely outfitted with shirts, pants, boots, socks and a matching fleece! I had emails from parents, this week, about what they could get. So far these are the only items purchased on the list- so feel free to email me anything you are going to pick up!
* Report cards went home today- please sign and return by Wednesday. * Food drive is on-going! *No school tomorrow! Teachers have in-service. *Please be sure to check out the 6th grade site to see who won the PTA award from our TA! Super exciting stuff! Mrs. Allen's TA and ours wrapped up our coin drive this morning. While falling short of our original goal of reaching $1,000 dollars, we did manage to collect $953.09! So, this event was still hugely successful. The students collected money from all of the middle school each Friday, and then had the difficult task of counting everyone's loose change. It took time but it was so worth it!
With this money our TAs will be able to support either two large families or a few smaller families. With that being said, our TA has already been assigned a family to sponsor. Parents have already been asking "How can I help?" If you wish to help us with our gift drive, please feel free to purchase any new item on the list below. I ask that you please let me know what it is you are going to purchase, so that people are not buying doubles. I know that with our coin drive money, we can successfully help two large families. If you are wanting to help donate items, we may be able to help more! The family information is in the link below. |
