Before our Thanksgiving break, we spent the day doing team building activities. We focused primarily on working together and communicating clearly and with kindness. We had a couple of challenges we participated in. "Tarp Flip" was the first challenge, where students had two tarps, and the goal of the activity was to stand on the tarps and somehow flip them over so everyone was standing on the opposite side. Students weren't allowed to touch the carpet during this process. We found success quickly with this activity, so, we moved onto the Button Punch challenge. Students had to punch the buttons in order from 1-30 as fast as they could. The buttons were laid out in a circle. Only one student was able to be in the circle at a time. A student could only press a button at a time, and if anyone stepped in the circle, or on the wrong button at the wrong time, we started over again at the beginning. Our first round of this activity brought many challenges and even after 24 minutes of trying it out, we were unable to do it. Students were not being patient or kind with one another and some students were "taking the lead" without hearing other students' ideas. After lunch break we came back to this challenge and we some some quiet leaders step forward and really advocate for students who weren't being heard. Students led a discussion that I stayed out of, and then they came up with a strategy for accomplishing the task. Eventually we finished the challenge in a little over 3 min and set a goal to do it faster. Amazingly, with positive talk, teamwork, and clear and kind communication, we met our goal and got our time all the way down to twenty-nine seconds! It was a great feeling of accomplishment! Please check out the pictures below from that day! In other news, our TA has been very busy making our room more festive for the winter season. We spent all week creating paper chains, snowflakes, and snowmen and our room looks awesome! The kids did a great job and some have even perfected the challenging six-point snowflakes made from paper. Please ask your child to show you! They have done an awesome job, check out the pics! Thank you all for your awesome donations to our family we have adopted for the holidays. We have winter gear for both the girl and boy and some clothing for each. We have a lot of toys for the little girl, and a couple of things for the little boy. If you are still planning on helping with this community service project, the donations are due next Wednesday 12/6. Thanks again for all your help in this project!

Mrs. Allen's TA and our TA will be adopting a family for the holidays. We received family assignments today and the children's sizes and needs are below. If you have any interest in supporting this community service project please feel free to help any way you can. Some families in the past have gone out shopping and bought an item off of the list, other families have sent in money. The way you participate is up to you. If you are going to be purchasing any items, please email me at [email protected] so that I can check them off of the list and we don't get doubles.
The students are very excited about this project, and can't wait to put all of the gifts together! Thank you for your support in this project! Hello Families! I apologize for my lack of blog posts lately, the last two weeks have flown by, and I'm usually pretty good about keeping this blog updated. It was great to see you all at conferences, thanks for coming in! Since my last post, a lot has happened. First, thanks to all of your awesome donations, we were able to BOO four classes! Our TA put together the baskets and we left them at each of the fifth grade teachers' doors! I heard really awesome things from fifth grade teachers, and they in turn passed on the fun to others in the middle school. Currently we have some 7th and 8th grade TA's now involved! How cool will it be if all of our classes in the whole school get this special treat left on their door? So fun! Thanks again for making it happen. Another thing that has been discussed this past week is the food and gift drive. Between Mrs. Allen's TA and our TA, we have decided to "adopt" one family and try to provide jackets, boots, and some small gifts to them for Christmas. More details will be coming about this next week. The students are really excited to do this for our community and we enjoy seeing the enthusiasm they have for giving back to our school. Lastly, we had our PTA award ceremony last week. Students from our class nominated Aubrey C. as their Positive Teamwork Award recipient. She was nominated for being a positive member of our community, for working hard, and for always being kind to her classmates! We also took the time to recognize students who should be proud of their personal responsibility! Congrats to Aubrey! Make sure you check out the 6th grade site for other information about events coming up! |
