There is currently an open writing contest throughout the Barre community. The contest relates to the book Wonder, by RJ Palacio (if you haven't read it, it's time! This is a fantastic book, one of my all time favorites!). The information is in the poster below. If you want to hand it in to me, I will get your writing to Mrs. Heath!

How lucky are we?! A cart with 24 laptops has just arrived in the sixth grade. It is currently being housed in my room, and we have full access to it, whenever we want! This not only changes the way that our classroom will run, it completely changes the way I teach and deliver information to students. For example, in the past, to practice inferring, students have read short passages and made educated guesses based on what they have read in the text. This year, to incorporate some common core standards, students are watching a short film (multi-media source), and making inferences based on what they see. When they write about their educated guesses, they have to provide evidence from the film to prove their thinking. Students have been able to do this completely digitally and independently! Each student is able to watch the movie, and stop/pause/replay whenever they need, at their own pace, in order to answer the questions and make the inferences. Students have been very excited to give them a test run. Make sure you watch the full slideshow in this post. You can truly see their excitement! Again, I repeat, How lucky are we!?
Four days a week we have about 30 minutes of silent reading time. We are slowly working towards our 25 book goal. I encourage students to pick a book that they will enjoy. I don't assign independent reading books, I want students to pick something they will WANT to read, not something I am MAKING them read! These kiddos look like they have picked good ones!
Students in my enrichment block this quarter will be designing and creating a website for the sixth grade's digital magazine project. I currently have Mr. Sanborn's students for enrichment. They have all successfully logged into their Google accounts and are now starting their Typing Club lessons. Part of our class will be a 15 minute typing lesson each day! Here you can see them hard at work, honing in on their keyboarding skills!
